The creation of a comprehensive BIM model for designing the reconstruction of a complex of treatment facilities

The task is the development of design documentation based on BIM technology for the reconstruction of existing and construction of new facilities of the treatment facilities complex.

Task

The main task of the project is the development of the design documentation based on BIM technologies for carrying out capital works on reconstruction of existing and construction of new sites of treatment facilities in the city of Zelenogorsk, Leningrad Region to increase the capacity by volume of sewage flow passing through the treatment facilities up to 15 thousand cubic meters/day.

Application of BIM-technologies allows to design a construction object as a whole, automatically reflect changes of parameters in all related values

and objects, form and enter classifiers of construction information. In the end, it should provide the customer with the:

  • Exclusion of possible “interdisciplinary” collisions of structures and engineering systems at the design stage, minimizing the risk of detecting errors already at the construction stage
  • Reduction of the design timeframe
  • Optimization of the budget for design and construction
  • Possibility to obtain the necessary data at any time of the project implementation
  • Precise calculations of the specification of all construction materials required for the works
  • Possibility to analyze the actual figures of the construction in comparison with the calendar plan of works
  • Ability to manage the lifecycle of the object.

Solution

To speed up the design timeframe, the documentation is developed simultaneously by two organizations, i.e., the BIM Laboratory of the SPbPU NTI Center and SPD Alliance-Electro.

Autodesk software was chosen to create a comprehensive BIM model. The join use of BIM-technologies and Autodesk services possibilities enable two teams of specialists to divide zones of responsibility and to work in parallel, coordinate decisions of allied sections, and detect interdisciplinary collisions in the intermediate stages.

During the preparatory stage, there were conducted surveys and measurements which allowed to define with high accuracy the structure of the terrain, dimensions, and coordinates of the existing buildings, structures, and roads. Geodetic works and airborne laser scanning of the territory and structures of the STC with the help of radio-controlled drones provide necessary data for building BIM models.

Based on the geodetic data in Civil 3D a three-dimensional terrain model of the land plot was formed. Laser scanning data were used to categorize each object for quick search of the required structure and to navigate in the point cloud. At the same time, BEP (main project document) was developed for work in the BIM environment.

At the design stage, each object was developed individually in AutoDesk Revit taking into account the BEP-project. Moreover detailed sections of architectural and structural solutions with all the necessary specifications for construction materials were worked out. All objects were gathered into the information model in AutoDesk Navisworks software to coordinate project, eliminate discrepancies and check possible collisions of related sections of the design work

Automation of the process not only reduces time and improves the quality of design, but also optimizes activities at all stages of the life cycle of buildings and structures, filling it with necessary and valuable information.  Planning of all processes allows to improve the quality of work on the project and its implementation, significantly reduces its cost, minimizes the risk of errors and provide quick access to information.

To account of working time over each stage of the project the new plug-ins was developed. It provides automatic reporting of project implementation with notifications of execution and changes made in various sections of the project. All the necessary information was automatically downloaded from Revit and Civil 3D software files, filled out in tabular form daily, and provided to the customer online.

Also during the design process, the development of standard automatic solutions for the creation of various units of the facility was started. This development in the future will allow to use solutions for automatic design without wasting time on the execution of a repeated node of the project.

To date, the part of the project documentation has been developed and coordinated with the customer: architectural, structural, and space planning solutions. BIM models of heating, ventilation, water supply, and sewerage systems, low-voltage networks, etc. are being created. These blocks are being developed in parallel by specialists from adjacent departments on the basis of architectural solutions.

The final stage of the project will be the preparation of working documentation, state expertising, and transfer of the ready set of working documentation to the customer for the construction work on the modernization of existing and construction of new facilities, taking into account the technical requirment and the modern requirements for a complex of treatment facilities.
